Botox and Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating primarily in the underarms and hands can be a nuisance to some. While it is not a serious medical problem, it can cause embarassment which affects one's quality of life. If antiperspirants are not cutting it, do you know that Botox can help?

Approved by the US-FDA for use in severe hyperhidrosis in the underarms, Botox (OnabotulinumtoxinA) is a natural purified protein which temporarily blocks the secretion of the chemical that is responsible for producing body's sweat glands. Botox injections are very shallow, (just below the surface of the skin where it remains). This procedure blocks the sweating in the areas it was injected. Results start in about 4 days and lasts between 4 to 12 months. The whole procedure is performed in a clinic setting in 15 minutes or less. It is best not to shave the area of treatment (at least 3 days of hair growth) before your appointment. Your doctor will schedule a follow-up with you in two weeks for assessment and evaluation. Based on studies, 82-87% reported decrease in sweating in the underarms and 80%-90% in palms.

Talk to your doctor if you have hyperhidrosis; why prolong the agony if there is a solution, right?

Laser Skin Rejuvenation: What to Expect Before, During and After The Procedure

laser skin rejuvenation, laser skin resurfacing, What to Expect Before, During and After The laser Procedure

Laser Skin Rejuvenation is a clinic or outpatient procedure which is primarily intended for patients who have surface problems such as wrinkles, acne scars or blemishes. In most cases, these patients may also suffer from vascular lesions or pigments like telengiectasia, fine spider veins or cherry angiomas. A combined IPL (intense pulse light) therapy targeting the pigment or lesion and non-ablative fractional laser procedure for textural problems can help achieve smoother and rejuvenated skin. It is imperative to have these procedures done by licensed and qualified healthcare professionals. Each state has its own regulation as to who can fire laser. But in general, only doctors, registered nurses, nurse practitioners or physician assistants can operate lasers.

Understanding Non-Invasive Fat Reduction Procedures

sculpsure, non-invasive fat reduction procedures

Are you struggling with excess fat in the abdomen or love handles despite exercising and eating right? then a non-invasive fat reduction procedure maybe your answer! Unlike traditional solutions (i.e liposuction, tummy tuck) which are invasive and with significant downtime, certain non-invasive fat reduction procedures a.k.a body contouring, when done right, can address troubled areas in your body. The next question is, which one is right for you? It is important to note that while the following treatments are cleared by the FDA, they work differently and may require multiple sessions to achieve desired results. Regardless of your choice, make sure that it is done by reputable medical professionals who can answer your concerns, design a plan, and set realistic expectations with you.

Top Fruits & Vegetables for Younger-Looking Skin

You are what you eat and drink. While moisturizers help provide hydration to the skin, what you consume has impact from the inside out. Fruits and vegetables are bursting with water and nutrients which help skin look nourished and strong. So snack on the following for a healthier and younger looking you!

Top Fruits & Vegetables for Younger-Looking Skin

1. Apple is teeming with Vitamin C and antioxidants which prevents premature wrinkles as well as make skin look brighter.

2. Fruits that are rich in beta-carotene such as mangoes and peaches help revive dullness and increase skin's integrity.

3. Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals, the culprit to cell and tissue damage.

4. Sweet Potatoes are packed with carotenoids which help boost collagen production. Collagen dwindles as we age, hence the formation of wrinkles and sagging skin.

5. Strawberries are rich in ellagic acid, an antioxidant that helps skin stay supple.

6. Avocados contain monounsaturated fat (good type of fat) which helps hydrate the skin.

7. Brussel sprouts are rich in folate and vitamins A and C which may help prevent sun damage.

8. Spinach helps flush out toxins which aids in achieving clear and radiant skin.

Quick tip: Pick fruits and vegetables that have darker pigment as they contain more antioxidants. Also, while fruits are obviously healthier, some contain high sugar so it is best to discuss your diet plan with your doctor or dietitian. Achieving younger looking skin is a combination of healthy lifestyle (use of sunscreen, skincare regimen, avoidance of alcohol and tobacco products) plus a little help from science

Treatment for Dark Circles

Treatment for Dark Circles, treatment for dark under eyes, laser treatment for dark circles

Dark under eyes or dark circles is a common problem for both men and women. It is caused by a plethora of factors such as hereditary, aging, lifestyle habits and medical issues. Facial aging leads to thinning of the skin or loss of volume under the eyes. Smoking, alcohol consumption, unprotected sun exposure, and fatigue or lack of sleep can also contribute to this problem. Certain medical problems like allergies, hyperpigmentation, and hyporthyroidism can also cause dark under eyes. Barring serious medical issues, there are several treatments you can explore, most of which suggest a combination of therapy to achieve optimal outcome.

1. Laser skin resurfacing helps increase collagen production and improve skin's overall texture.
2. Intense pulse light helps with vascular pigmentation (blood vessels appear purple or blue).
3. Chemical peels help reduce hyperpigmentation.
4. Injectable fillers containing hyaluronic acid help restore volume under the eyes.
5. Surgery like blepharoplasty can help correct dark circles permanently.

What about topical or over-the-counter products? while they can camouflage and provide hydration under the eyes, they do not really solve the problem.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month

July is UV Safety Awareness Month. Continued and unprotected exposure to UV or ultraviolet rays increases your risk for melanoma or skin cancer, sunburn and premature wrinkles. Sunlight and tanning beds are the major source of UV rays. According to the American Cancer Society, UVA rays are responsible for premature wrinkles while UVB rays cause sunburn but it's important to note that both UV rays play a role in skin cancer. How To Treat Stretch Marks

Stretch marks appear as a consequence of weight gain or loss, pregnancy, growth spurts, hormonal changes and to some extent, bodybuilding. While they are deemed normal, most people are bothered by them. When the skin is overly-stretched, it affects the collagen which makes up skin's connective tissue, thereby producing unsightly stripes which vary in intensity. It's important to understand that while stretch marks are permanent, there are ways you can reduce their appearance with proper skincare and cosmetic procedure.

Treatment Options for Wrinkles

Truth be told. You can’t totally remove wrinkles but you can reduce or delay their appearance with proper skincare and lifestyle changes vis-à-vis clinically- tested procedures.

For skincare, it’s paramount to emphasize sun avoidance as prolonged exposure without protection contributes to photodamage or premature wrinkling of the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a sunscreen with SPF 30 for daily use, to be reapplied every two hours for continued protection. Likewise, you should use facial moisturizer or serum to keep skin well hydrated, supple and radiant. When it comes to lifestyle, smoking cessation, drinking less alcohol, exercising and eating a well-balanced diet can help reduce the incidence of wrinkles.

There are in-clinic procedures that help address wrinkles; the big question is, which one is right for you. It’s important to do your research and talk to your doctor about your skin concerns.

Botox is one of the most popular procedures for wrinkle reduction. It treats and improves moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet. Result is not permanent and based on studies, it can last up to 4 months in most patients. It is comprised of several tiny injections which take about 10 to 15 minutes per session. For maximum desired results, it is usually combined with fillers or lasers.

Fillers add volume to different areas of the face like cheeks, nasolabial folds (laugh or smile lines) and lips, making them look plump and youthful. With proper treatment, results can last up to one year.

Pelleve is a revolutionary non-surgical procedure to lift and tighten aging and sagging skin. It heats the deep layers of the skin using radiofrequency to stimulate collagen production without damaging the epidermis. It can be used to treat nasolabial folds, frown lines between the eyebrows and forehead, loose skin above or below the eyes and surrounding crow’s feet. While most patients see immediate result on their first treatment, it is recommended to have at least 3 treatments, 30 days apart, to achieve desirable effects.

Laser Skin Renewal is a breakthrough non-ablative procedure that helps clear several skin imperfections on your face and body. It targets sun damage, brown spots and wrinkles, helping you look beautiful, radiant and youthful. It works by delivering pulses of energy, targeting the pigment, and stimulating collagen which then results to smoother and more even skin tone. A series of treatment maybe required for desired outcome.

Regardless of the options you decide on, it is critical to have the procedure done by qualified medical professionals. After all, it is your face.
